A 16-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly using an ax to break into a woman's Mesa home.

Police said probable cause was developed to take the teen into custody following the home break-in near 8th Avenue and Dobson Road on Sunday evening.

Erika Grijalva told ABC15 she was sound asleep when her door bell rang twice. A young man then stormed into her home armed with an ax.

Grijalva quickly locked herself in her bathroom and called 911, but the teen started slashing through the door.

The suspect reportedly said he wanted cash and guns, but Grijalva had neither. She handed over her laptop and tablet, and satisfied with that, he left by jumping her back fence.

Police believe that same suspect broke into another house nearby, but no one there was home. Officers did find the ax in the yard, but still no sign of the teen.

On Friday, Mesa police say a 16-year-old suspect was identified as the person in the video surveillance.

Officers located the suspect on Thursday and arrested him for one count of kidnapping, burglary in the first degree, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and two counts of burglary in the third degree.

Because the suspect is not being charged as an adult in the incident, ABC15 is not releasing his identity.
