An alert Mesa resident who noticed something unusual in his neighborhood took action and helped police catch a couple potential bad guys.

According to court documents, just after noon on January 28 a resident in the area of Main and Country Club noticed two men running from a home, carrying backpacks and looking around as they left.

The resident found the behavior odd and got in his truck to follow them. He even snapped photos of the alleged suspects as they ran down the street.

Police said in their report that as the suspects turned a corner, one of the suspects fired shots at the man's truck.

Officers responded and found the suspects running and at least one of them threw a gun into a backyard.

Police arrested one man, identified as 19-year-old Michael Edwards Olivas. He was booked into jail on aggravated assault for allegedly firing shots at the citizen and criminal trespassing for allegedly entering someone's home.

Police did interview the owner of the home that the two men were seen running from. According to documents, the homeowner told police that she heard a noise downstairs and investigated, but did not find anyone inside. She did, however, notice that the back door was open.

On Monday, February 8 a meeting is being held among neighbors to address safety in the community.
