A selfless Mesa girl celebrated her seventh birthday in a unique way this year.

Like most children, Sophia Coy had a long list of toys that she wanted for her birthday this year. However, instead of keeping them for herself, she wanted to distribute them to kids at Cardon Children's Medical Center.

ABC15 first spoke to Sophia in February and the community was quick to show their support.

"Even just an hour after, it just started pouring in and when I woke up my inbox had like 100 different emails," Sophia's mother, Krystyna Coy, said.

They collected more than 300 toys to bring to kids who are hospitalized and in need of some joy.

"I hope it helps them," Krystyna said. "Especially like — with procedures — it's scary!"

Sophia's actions aren't going unrecognized by staff at the medical center either.

"These toys make a huge difference for them," Child Life Specialist Rebecca Propp said. "It helps them feel more comfortable and gives them some normalization in their life."

But for Sophia — it's simple. She said sharing her gifts with kids who really need some happiness was the best present on her birthday.
