Lightning might have sparked Tempe house fire

The Tempe Fire Department is investigating whether or not lightning caused a house to catch fire Sunday morning.

Fire investigator Brandon Siebert said neighbors near Kyrene and Ray roads reported hearing a loud bang before the fire broke out on a home's roof around 6:45 a.m.

At the time, he said, there was thunder and lightning in the area.

Siebert said a man was home but got out safely.

Crews also rescued his two dogs. Family members said the man let them outside once he noticed the fire, but they were scared and hid in the backyard.

"Once we were made aware of pets, it became a priority for the firefighters to get the pets out of the backyard safely, and they were able to do that fairly quickly," Siebert said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
