Jason Sanchez-Vasquez, 36, is hospitalized at the Maricopa County Medical Center and remains in critical condition.

Officials were first called to the area of Calle Sonora and Calle Batoua after receiving reports about an armed carjacking. Sanchez-Vasquez is accused of firing shots out of the stolen vehicle while speeding away from the scene.

According to MCSO, it was the second car the suspect had allegedly stolen that day and was previously involved in an altercation with another person.

Deputies attempted to confront Sanchez-Vasquez near Calle San Angelo and Avenida del Yaqui but the suspect fled the scene and fired several rounds at deputies.

During the incident, Sanchez-Vasquez allegedly struck an MCSO patrol car and continued to shoot at deputies. An MCSO spokesperson said the deputies returned fire and shot the suspect who was transported to the hospital.

No deputies were hurt and an investigation is ongoing. The deputies involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave and have not been identified.

The suspect was previously convicted of weapons charges and has served time behind bars in Arizona.

The incident caused a daycare center to be placed on lockdown as a precaution.
