PD: Man uses screwdriver, rock in Tempe assault

Posted

Police say a man entered a Tempe restaurant last month and threatened a worker with a screwdriver.

Tempe police said 28-year-old Matthew William Nelson entered the Steak 'n Shake near Mill Avenue and University Drive on Nov. 22 before it was opened to the public. A worker asked him several times to leave, but he refused.

While the victim was on the phone with police, Nelson reportedly grabbed a screwdriver from a worker who was working on an ATM machine next door.

Police said Nelson attempted to follow the victim inside the business, but the victim held the door shut. Nelson broke the door handle and managed to get inside while the worker fled. Nelson also fled the area afterwards.

As he left, Nelson grabbed a rock and busted out the window of the nearby Tempe human resource building, according to police. As police approached him, he had another rock in his hand and threatened to throw it at officers.

He continued to run away, but police caught up and arrested him a couple of blocks away near College Avenue and 5th Street.

Nelson faces charges of trespassing, criminal damage, aggravated assault among others.
