Tempe police say somebody in one of the second story apartments was trying to use butane to extract hash oil from marijuana when the explosion happened. Butane is a flammable gas, which can concentrate when used indoors and explode. Hash oil is a potent derivative of marijuana. Marijuana publications, including High Times, warn against using the butane extraction process indoors.

Another resident, Carlos Ortiz, said his bedroom ceiling caved in after the explosion. He lives beneath the suspect's apartment.
