TEMPE, AZ — Tempe police say a man was arrested on DUI charges after he was involved in a crash while on an electric scooter.

According to official paperwork, the incident occurred on October 26, 2018, around 9 a.m.

Shelton Begay, 28, was seen riding in lanes of traffic on Rural Road near Broadway Road when he was involved in a collision with a southbound vehicle in another lane.

Officials say Begay was seen swerving in and out of his lane before the wreck and collided with the car when he entered the other lane.

Begay reportedly fled the scene on the scooter but was located by police shortly after.

Officials say Begay showed several signs of impairment including slurred speech, a smell of alcohol, bloodshot eyes and poor balance.

Police told ABC15 his blood-alcohol content was .285.

Last summer, a scooter rider in San Diego was cited for driving under the influence after hitting a vehicle.
