TEMPE, AZ — Tempe police were involved in a shooting near 48th Street and Southern Avenue Friday morning.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. Friday at a mobile home park.

Tempe police say they were originally called to the scene near 48th Street and Southern Avenue for a reported homicide.

The caller told police she believed her son had shot her husband.

When officers arrived, they surrounded the home where the reported incident took place.

A man reportedly came out of the home holding a gun.

Police say the man initially pointed the gun at himself but then turned it toward officers, which is when an officer shot him.

The man was struck and taken to a hospital for treatment. He has been identified as 55-year-old Robert Purdie.

When officers went into the home after the shooting, they found a man dead inside.

During an investigation, detectives learned Purdie allegedly shot and killed his stepfather, identified as 77-year-old Roland B. Jahnke.

No officers were hurt in the shooting, according to Tempe police.

Police say "there is no threat to the community."

Friday morning's incident marks the 35th Valley shooting involving authorities, according to media reports.

Mesa police will investigate the police shooting portion of the incident while Tempe police will investigate the portion where the stepfather was shot and killed.
