Officials are investigating a deadly shooting involving a child in Avondale.
The shooting happened on Wednesday morning near Central Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road.
Avondale officials said the child, a 5-year-old boy, was killed from a gunshot wound to the head. Police officers attempted life-saving efforts on the boy after they were called to the home. Once fire officials arrived, the boy was taken to a hospital where he passed away.
Police say the boy was at home with his mom and two siblings at the time of the shooting. The boy went into a bedroom and found a 9mm semi-automatic handgun that belonged to his father. The father was not at home at the time of the shooting.
Police said the boy's mother heard a noise and walked into the room where she found her injured son.
Police are not looking for any suspects; it appears to be an accidental, self-inflicted injury.
There are no pending charges, but the case remains under investigation.
