BUCKEYE, AZ — The Litchfield Elementary School District is asking students and staff to practice “good health habits” after an increase in the number of children with pneumonia at its Verrado Elementary School.

The Maricopa County Department of Health confirms 30 cases of pneumonia associated with the school this school year.

LESD says it is encouraging good hygiene, hand-washing, not sharing drinks and covering your mouth and nose while sneezing to try to prevent sharing of any sicknesses.

“Teachers and custodians have been advised to be even more diligent about properly sanitizing desks, doorknobs, and all areas of the classroom,” the district said.

The district says that administrators met with the Maricopa County Department of Heath to help identify the steps mentioned above, among others, to ensure the health of students and staff.

Officials say families of students should expect to receive a letter from Maricopa County Department of Public Health distributed by the school Thursday with instructions on when to see a healthcare provider and how to prevent the spread of disease.
