Card skimmers found on PHX, Glendale gas pumps

State officials have found five skimmers at gas pumps at several locations in the Phoenix area recently and they're advising motorists and gas station operators to be on the alert.

Thieves place the devices on pumps to capture information from credit and debit cards and then use the information to make fraudulent charges.

The Department of Weights and Measures says skimmers have been found in Glendale and northeast Phoenix.

Officials said the two most recent skimmers were found at a Glendale Circle K at 59th Avenue and Bell Road. The previous three were located at Circle K stations at Tatum Road and Greenway, and 32nd Street and Cactus Road.

Environmental Program Manager Michelle Wilson says the stations should regularly check their gas pumps for skimmers, and department interim Director Mark Killian says consumers should ask clerks how often the stations check their pumps for skimmers.

The department also advises consumers to inspect pumps before inserting their cards and to check their account statements for charges they didn't make.
