Valley family finds video of hit-and-run suspect

Posted

A Valley hit-and-run victim's family is taking the investigation into their own hands hoping to track down the suspect who hit and killed Dale Wensel or at least a witness who might recognize the suspect's van.

On November 19, police say a van sped through a crosswalk at 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road, hitting Wensel's bike and dragging him down Bethany Home Road before taking off.

His ex, Jennifer Dodd, has been going door-to-door asking surrounding businesses for surveillance video from that night.

She says many of the cameras weren't working or are too poor in quality to make out any details, but she did track down footage from a nearby apartment complex.

The video shows the suspect's van pulling in moments after the crash and then turning around and leaving.

Dodd says she is the one who bought the video to the attention of police who later released still-photos to the public.

She says she knows police are busy, but doesn't feel like her family's case is a priority.

"I am so frustrated it's not even funny. How could they let this guy get away for this long," said Dodd.

She's confident that there are regular commuters who walk or bike through that intersection or wait at the bus stops who may recognize the suspect's van and she is determined to make sure everyone is on the lookout for it.

"Somebody has to have seen something," she said. "Dale's daughter is only 11 years old, she needs closure."
