Police are investigating after a gun was reportedly found Friday in the backpack of a 9-year-old girl at Glendale American Elementary School.

Police say a fourth-grade student reported seeing a gun in another student’s backpack at the school, located near 55th Avenue and Butler Drive.

That teacher immediately took the backpack from the 9-year-old girl and took her to the front office.

The child reportedly said she was “dared” by another student to bring the gun to school.

Police say they’re continuing to conduct a threat assessment regarding the incident. So far no direct threats have been uncovered toward students or staff at the school, and no injuries have been reported.

Glendale police say they would also like to remind students all issues involving weapons on campus will always be taken seriously and are never considered a joke.

The incident comes just one day after a student at Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear was found with a handgun and multiple knives.
