GLENDALE — A 23-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot by Glendale police near 59th and Northern avenues.
Glendale police say the shooting occurred Saturday around 5:30 p.m. after a man called police saying he had a gun and wanted to "light some people up," specifically officers.
When officers arrived on scene, the man began making threatening comments and charged at two officers with a homemade spear. Officer say the spear was made from wood and was about three to five feet in length with a point at the end.
Police say the second officer yelled out commands for the man to "stop and drop his weapon." When he did not comply, the officer fired several shots at the suspect.
Officers began providing first aid immediately detained the man, who has since been identified as Alexander Mear.
Mear is facing at least two counts of aggravated assault, police say.
