Police identify man shot, killed in police shooting near 59th and Northern avenues

GLENDALE — A man is dead following a Glendale police shooting near 59th and Northern avenues early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred after 4:30 a.m. near 59th and Northern avenues, when Glendale Police Department officers were called to the scene for a residential burglary alarm, according to Glendale officials.

When an officer arrived, they located an adult man, later identified as 45-year-old Christopher Cuevas, in the backyard of a home.

Police say as Cuevas made his way to the street, he allegedly brandished a "metal bar" and came towards the officer. The officer then fired at Cuevas, according to police.

Authorities say Cuevas was treated by emergency crews but was later pronounced dead.

The officer who fired at the man has been put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation into the incident. The officer is a two-year veteran of the force, according to officials.
