Man shot by Glendale police officer Wednesday near 65th Ave and Cactus Rd

GLENDALE, AZ — Authorities are investigating a shooting involving a Glendale police officer Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened around 2 p.m. near 65th and Altadena avenues, south of Cactus Road.

Officers were called to the area after multiple 911 calls regarding a person with a gun. A police spokesperson says the man was walking erratically and driving around.

When officers got to the area they observed the vehicle in question and crossed paths with it. At this time, officials say the police officers observed the man point a firearm at them. One officer fired their weapon multiple times striking the man in the right arm. A second officer did not fire their weapon, police say.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment and later released into police custody. He has been identified by police as 24-year-old Martell Hare, Jr.

During a police interview, authorities say Hare stated he wanted to die and was attempting to prompt a police shooting.

No officers were injured. The Surprise Police Department is handling the investigation into the shooting.

Hare has been booked into jail and is facing several charges including, aggravated assault, endangerment, disorderly conduct and more.
