GOODYEAR, AZ — Goodyear has passed an ordinance making in the first in the Valley to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 to 21.
The ordinance passed unanimously Monday, banning the sale of electronic cigarettes, tobacco and similar products.
The new rule bans smoking and vaping at schools, school events, public parks, trails and prohibit sales of smoking and vaping materials to anyone under 21 years old, according to a release from the city.
City leaders say first offenders could face a fine up to $500, however, there will be a 90-day grace period. Police will use that 90 days to educate residents, schools and businesses.
The state Department of Health has confirmed three cases of vaping-related illness.
