GOODYEAR, AZ — Authorities are investigating after a 13-year-old boy died after being struck by a school bus in Goodyear on Friday.

On Monday, officials identified the child as Peyton Munger, a student at Western Sky Middle School.

Goodyear fire officials said the crash happened near 144th Avenue and Indian School Road around 4 p.m. outside of Western Sky Middle School.

Police say Munger was rushed to a pediatric trauma hospital in extremely critical condition, but later died from his injuries.

"The student actually hit the bus toward the rear of the bus and then in the process got run over," said Goodyear Police Sgt. Jason Seabright.

"He was nice and smart and he's generous and he always cared for his friends," said Jace Bunts, a friend of Peyton's. "It's hard cause it's like knowing that he's gone and it's just like frustrating."

The driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, police said.

Police say there were students on the bus at the time of the crash. No other injuries are suspected.

Police have not made any arrests in this case and it is still under investigation.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Peyton's family. If you would liked to help, you can donate here.

Editor's note: Officials originally identified the child as 12 years old, but have since updated his age to 13.
