GOODYEAR, AZ — A Goodyear officer is now on leave after a Valley man caught the officer driving erratically on a major interstate.
Brian Franks tells ABC15, he spotted the officer's patrol car swerving left and right on MC85 northbound. When the officer merged onto I-10, Franks started recording.
Franks' video shows the squad car swerving in and out of the left-hand lane and come dangerously close to other cars on the road.
“It’s almost hard to believe that somebody that gave the oath to protect and serve is acting in that manner," said Franks "You would expect an officer of the law to be the one that would be obeying the law and the traffic rules."
Franks called Goodyear police to report the officer and showed them the video.
The department tells ABC15, they share Franks' concerns and know the person behind the wheel was one of their female officers.
"She was on duty, but not in uniform," according to Deputy Chief Justin Hughes. "She was on a "special detail."
The officer is on administrative leave, as of Wednesday, while the department conducts an internal investigation.
“When you’re driving at speeds of 85+ miles an hour, and you’re driving across lanes, almost ramming vehicles, you put not just yourself, but anybody else that’s on the road in danger." said Franks.
“Even when you don’t think somebody is looking, you still have to be doing the right thing.”
