GOODYEAR, AZ — Police are investigating after a human skull was found among donations at a Goodwill in the West Valley.
Officers were called to the store near Sarival Avenue and Yuma Road on Tuesday night.
Police took "what appears to be an actual human skull" and transported it to the medical examiner's office for further examination.
After observing the skull, the medical examiner believes it is historic. Officials believe there is no forensic significance and may not be associated with any crime.
“This is an unusual one,” said Lisa Berry with the Goodyear Police Department.
Berry tells ABC15 that the donation box was dropped off sometime over the weekend and was opened up by employees late Tuesday.
“It did not ever make it to the floor. It was in the donation box, again, with other taxidermy items,” added Berry.
A spokesperson for Goodwill of Central & Northern Arizona says their store team followed protocol by immediately reporting the donation to Goodyear police.
“Goodwill did do the right thing. Anything suspicious should always be reported,” said Berry.
The investigation is ongoing.
