Goodyear police say they have a suspect in custody in a hit-and-run accident that seriously injured a teenage boy.

According to Goodyear police, 37-year-old Alejandro Barragan was arrested on Monday.

Police said the 14-year-old boy was struck shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday while entering the Elliot Market parking lot near Elliot Road and Estrella Parkway.

Witnesses told officers that the driver got out of his truck to check on the teen and then drove westbound on Elliot before police arrived.

The boy, identified by his mother as Ryan Scali, was awake and responsive when he was taken to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, but suffered several broken bones, a head contusion and damage to his liver and kidney. He also had several metal rods placed in his legs and had to get dozens of stitches in his head, his mother told ABC15.

"He will have a very long recovery," Scali's mother said.
