Officials are investigating after a group of people, on horseback, were shot at in Laveen.

The shooting happened near 79th Avenue and Alta Vista Road on July 21 around 6:30 p.m., the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

According to deputies, one of the victims contacted them about the shooting. They said they were in the river bed when they were shot at from across by a group of people who were in a truck.

The victims told the shooters to stop shooting but the shooters didn't stop; the victims mounted the horses and began to leave when two of the animals were struck by the gunfire. The victims were able to leave the area as the shooters continued firing.

The animals were each struck at least once. No people were struck.

A deputy responding to the scene found a vehicle matching the description of the suspect truck. As the deputy approached the car, gun shots were heard. The deputy activated his lights and sirens and asked the suspects to stop shooting.

The suspects did stop firing, but quickly got into the truck and fled from the area.

A helicopter was dispatched to the area to help locate the suspects, but the search was unsuccessful. Phoenix police also patrolled the area and were unable to find the truck or the suspects.

Other information is unavailable; contact MCSO if you have any details.
