TOLLESON, AZ — Police say a homicide suspect was shot and killed during an officer-involved shooting in Tolleson.
The incident happened after 8 a.m. Friday near 87th Avenue and Van Buren Street.
Phoenix Police Department officials say detectives from its fugitive apprehension team started following a homicide suspect near 39th Avenue and Buckeye Road. Police say the suspect, later identified as Rene Ruiz, realized he was being followed and officers tried to get him to pull over near 43rd Avenue and Buckeye.
The suspect did not pull over and sped away from officers. The police helicopter followed Ruiz until he stopped near 87th Avenue and Van Buren.
At that point, police say he rammed an unmarked police vehicle, ran away and attempted to carjack another driver.
At that time, officers took action to stop the suspect from carjacking a victim. A police officer hit Ruiz with his vehicle, causing him to fall. Police say Ruiz then fired an an approaching officer. The officer, a 20-year veteran of the force, was not hit and fired at Ruiz, hitting him.
Ruiz was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
No officers were injured during the incident.
Police say Ruiz was initially wanted after a homicide that occurred on August 17 near 33rd Avenue and Buckeye Road.
