PEORIA, AZ — Officials say the suspect in a deadly AMBER Alert incident out of Peoria has died following a suicide attempt in jail.

Eric Maes was reportedly left incapacitated following a suicide attempt while behind bars, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. He died Friday, according to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office.

Before Maes' death, charges against him were dropped so his family could make medical decisions on his behalf, the MCAO told ABC15.

Maes had been taken into custody earlier this month after police were made aware of a kidnapped child and injured woman. An AMBER Alert was then issued for Eric Maes who was said to have stolen Brittany Martie's vehicle with their 10-month-old son inside.

Martie later died from injuries sustained during the altercation with Maes. The child was later found alone but unharmed.

After charges against Maes were dropped, a member of Martie's family told ABC15 that it would be difficult for them to get closure.

Jail crime detectives are investigating the suicide attempt, which is typical. The Professional Standards Bureau is reviewing whether all policies and procedures were followed.
