An ATV rider died Friday after crashing his vehicle and ending up in a dry canal.
Officials say the accident happened near the Loop 303 and Lake Pleasant Parkway around 3 p.m.
The 63-year-old rider has been identified as Ramon Martinez Rubio, Jr.
Martinez Rubio, Jr. was out for a ride with a friend. Officials say he was trying to cross the canal and ended up rolling his ATV.
"The rider was not wearing a helmet and hit his head several times, several injuries. Definitely a tragic accident and again make sure you're ATVing where you should be and wear a helmet," said Peoria Police spokesman Brandon Sheffert.
Martinez Rubio, Jr. had a dog with him on the ride. Police say the pup was not injured in the crash.
Authorities are still investigating, but say alcohol does not appear to be involved.
