PEORIA, AZ — The family of a retired Peoria Police officer and spokesperson for the police and fire department are hoping to raise enough money to make life easier for the former officer.

Mike Tellef was with the city for 33 years, but after developing a severe hip infection, doctors were forced to remove his artificial hip.

It left Mike confined to a wheelchair.

"There's nothing really in there," said Mike. "What's holding it all in place it's just ligaments and tendons. Because there is absolutely no bone connection what so ever."

Right now Mike is using a standard wheelchair but his family is hoping to raise enough for a motorized chair.

Even after insurance cover the bulk of the cost, Mike is left with a bill of several thousand dollars.

Tellef's soon-to-be stepdaughter set up a GoFundMe to help raise funds for a wheelchair.
