PEORIA — Peoria police say a Sergeant with the department was involved in a shooting late Wednesday night, according to a release sent on Thursday.
Police say the Sergeant was conducting a traffic stop near 83rd Avenue and West Cholla Street around 11 p.m. on March 27.
The suspect, an unidentified 23-year-old man, was pulled over for a traffic violation when police say he "reached for a gun that was in his lap."
The Sergeant allegedly fired one shot at the suspect, striking the suspect in the face.
According to Peoria PD's press statement, the Sergeant was able to take the suspect into custody and "summon medical aid" following the shooting.
The suspect was transported to an area hospital, where he is currently being treated for serious injuries.
The Sergeant involved in the shooting was unharmed, according to Peoria police.
Police say the suspect is from Peoria, and that his identity will become available when he is released from the hospital and booked into jail.
According to the press statement, the Sergeant involved in the shooting was wearing his body camera, which was activated at the time of the incident. That video has not been released.
