Peoria police officers are welcoming a furry new friend to their team.

On Saturday, Oliver will join Detective Gretel Hopkins of the Special Victim's Unit after a graduation ceremony at Centennial Plaza near 85th Avenue and Mountain View Road.

Oliver is a service dog who was donated to the police department by the Foundation for Service Dog Support (FSDS).

The pup will provide emotional support to individuals who have experienced traumatic events by providing stress relief, a police spokesperson said.

Additionally, Oliver will be supporting dispatchers, first responders and other personnel who have witnessed these traumatic events. He will also play a vital role when it comes to attending events in the community.
