A Peoria police spokesperson said a 12-year-old girl heard a "loud pop" Friday afternoon near Peoria and 87th avenues and found her mother on the ground with a gunshot wound.
The girl called 911 and a neighbor came to the apartment to help the child. The woman told dispatchers that the alleged victim was bleeding heavily from her ear. She also discovered a bullet casing near the woman.
The neighbor also told authorities over the phone that the father may have been the shooter. She said she believed that he returned to his unit, which is also located in the same apartment complex.
According to authorities the couple lived in separate units because of relationship issues.
The 49-year-old woman suffered a gunshot wound to her head and was taken to the hospital. She died as a result of her injuries just hours later.
A 53-year-old man was found in a nearby apartment unit suffering from a gunshot wound. The man was also shot in the head but was still breathing when he was found by police officers. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said the second shooting may be self-inflicted, but they're still investigating.
The child is with extended family and is being offered resources by both police and fire officials.
We will update this story as further details come into the newsroom.
