PEORIA, AZ — A Valley gym held a fundraiser for the four Peoria firefighters injured in an explosion at an APS facility in April.
CrossFit Unwavering opened its doors to the community on Saturday. For $20, participants did a firefighter-inspired workout. All the proceeds went toward the firefighters and their families.
"Us as a community, we wanted to get together somehow and see what we could do to help them the best that we could," said Leigha Graziano, a Glendale firefighter.
Graziano says the men injured were her friends. She described the moment she heard about the explosion.
"My stomach dropped a little bit knowing, I know those guys," Graziano said. "One of them I sat through medic school next to him for eight months."
The men are still recovering. The Peoria Fire Department says two are back home, one is in rehab, and another is still in the hospital.
Peoria Fire Captain Mario Bravo said their main concern is that the men get healthy.
Bravo said they appreciate the overwhelming support the department has received from the community.
