SURPRISE, AZ — Officials say a 3-year-old girl has died after being pulled from a pool near Reems and Greenway roads in Surprise.

Surprise fire officials say it is unknown how long the child was in the pool but they believe it could have been up to three hours.

Officials say life-saving measures were used until fire officials arrived on the scene.

The girl was taken to a local hospital where she later died.

Through the investigation, detectives learned the child and her mother were home alone at the time. They both usually take a nap during the day, but the child did not fall asleep with the mother.

Police say not all of the usual safeguards were in place to keep the child out of the pool, and the child was able to access the backyard on her own while her mother was asleep.

An adult family member reportedly returned home and found the child in the water.

The case is being submitted to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review.
