SURPRISE, AZ — A man is dead after a shooting in Surprise involving police officers Tuesday afternoon.
Around 12:30 p.m., officers were called to the parking lot of a Walmart near Litchfield and Bell roads for reports of an "unwelcome visitor."
At one point, officers located the man in the backseat of a vehicle.
When officers approached him, he reportedly yelled, "I have a gun," and reached under a pile of belongings, according to police.
Officials say that's when an officer fired their weapon.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified by police as 28-year-old Joseph Martin.
No officers were injured.
No other details have been released.
