SURPRISE, AZ — One person was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a shooting involving Surprise police officers.
It happened in a parking lot near Litchfield and Bell roads.
Surprise police officials say detectives in plain clothes and an unmarked car were following two suspects to the area of a Walmart parking lot.
At that point, the officers attempted to take the two into custody. One was taken into custody without incident while the second suspect tried to run away.
During this, the suspect struck the officer prompting an officer to fire their weapon, striking the suspect.
He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released into police custody. He has been identified as Manuel Herra and has been booked into the Maricopa County Jail.
The officer was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
No other officers or nearby people were hurt.
Officials say the two men were being investigated for a previous felony crime, but did not provide any other details.
The investigation remains ongoing.
