SURPRISE — A Surprise Police Department police officer is seriously injured after a vehicle crashed into the officer's car on L-303 at Waddell late Saturday night, the Arizona Department of Public Safety says.

According to DPS, the Surprise police officer was completing a traffic stop in the area of L-303 at Waddell when a gray Hyundai Tucson SUV crashed into the back of the officer's vehicle.

The officer sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries, DPS says. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Hyundai Tucson, identified as 30-year-old Kourtnie M. Chavez, also sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries. She was also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but has since been released and booked into jail.

Her charges include aggravated assault, endangerment, and DUI.
