SURPRISE, AZ — Police say a man is in custody after two people were found dead in a Surprise neighborhood overnight.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning in the area of Waddell Road and Bullard Avenue.
Surprise police say two men, 26-year-old Joseph Hutchinson of Surprise, and 29-year-old Ricardo De La Isla of El Mirage, were killed in the encounter.
Police say officers found Hutchinson's body in the roadway, while De La Isla was found nearby in a vehicle. While authorities were on scene investigating, the Surprise Police Department received another call from a resident approximately two blocks away. The resident reported that there was a man, later identified as 23-year-old Chasten Fairris, banging on his front door.
Fairris appeared to have a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was taken to an area hospital.
During their investigation and after interviewing multiple people, detectives were able to determine that Fairris and Hutchinson had been at a house in the area and had planned to lure De La Isla to the home, lure him away from the home and then rob him.
After being treated for his injuries, Fairris was taken into custody by the Surprise Police Department. Fairris did not provide his account of the events to investigators.
Fairris was booked into the Maricopa County 4th Avenue jail and faces two counts of first-degree murder. Police said the charges stem from Fairris's involvement in the robbery attempt that ultimately led to the deaths of Joseph Hutchinson and Ricardo De La Isla.
