FLORENCE, AZ — As the number of mass shootings continues to rise throughout the country, active shooter drills are also becoming more common, including right here in Arizona.

A training exercise was held at the Pinal County Courthouse in Florence on Saturday.

Nearly 80 law enforcement officers and fire personnel participated.

Joe Pyritz, a spokesman for Pinal County, says they conducted the drill because of the shootings we've seen nationwide.

"We look at those and say, well it can't happen in Florence. Yes, it can happen in Florence," Pyritz said.

"This brings all our training together to be able to see how you can perform in a large scale exercise, and then you review it and evaluate it and see how you can help become better in the future," said Lieutenant Scott Jerven, with the Casa Grande Police Department.

The exercise was paid for through a federal grant specifically for active shooter training.
