Arizona vehicle registration cost going up with new Public Safety Fee

Your vehicle registration is about to get more expensive starting in December.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, vehicle registration renewals will have a new Public Safety Fee of $32 per vehicle. The fee will be $5 for street-legal golf carts and off-highway vehicles.

The changes go into effect on December 1.

The fees will go toward Highway Patrol operations including “response to collisions on Arizona highways, enforcing state laws designed to keep the motoring public safe, arresting impaired drivers, assisting motorists in distress, air-rescue operations and patrolling more than 6,800 miles of highways.”

ADOT says the fees will also help improve Arizona’s infrastructure.

In the past decade, ADOT says most of Highway Patrol’s budget came from gas tax. The Public Safety Fee will allow gas tax money to better support roadway maintenance and construction.
