After this week's horrific child abuse case, ABC15 looked into the numbers behind child abuse in the state.
The number of child abuse reports continue to rise as 51,963 child abuse reports were filed with the Arizona Department of Child Safety between October 2014 and September 2015.

In the same time period, Maricopa County had more than 30,000 of those reports.

Neglect accounts for the majority of child abuse reports, with figures that surpass every other report type combined.

In a December 2015 report from AZ DCS, the agency had 14,899 backlogged cases of child abuse as of November 28.
