Desert tortoises up for adoption from Arizona Game and Fish Department

The Arizona Game and Fish Department is hoping to get dozens of tortoises into new homes.

It's illegal to remove a desert tortoise from the wild, however, there is a surplus of captive tortoises in the state right now.

If you're interested in adopting, there are some things to consider first -- like how they can live up to 100 years.

Before you make a decision, check the Game and Fish website to make sure you have the proper shelter and resources. The website also offers an adoption application.

Arizona Game and Fish officials say the tortoises do best with some room to roam and a burrow habitat.

Tortoise adoption is free.
