The Hoover Dam bypass bridge was closed for nearly five hours Tuesday, halting tourist and truck traffic on a key route between Las Vegas and Phoenix, while authorities talked a woman out of jumping to the Colorado River below.

Las Vegas police said the woman surrendered to police a little before 11 a.m., and was hospitalized for a mental health evaluation that can take up to 72 hours. Her identity wasn't made public.

The Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge road and pedestrian walkway were closed after the woman was seen on the bridge about 6 a.m., and officials issued an advisory for motorists on U.S. 93 between Nevada and Arizona to use alternate routes.
