Horton was last seen after he was dropped off by friends around midnight three miles off Interstate 17 along Table Mesa Road. He planned to be picked up Wednesday around 3 p.m. at the same location.
Officials say Horton is an avid hiker and survivalist who has experience with crossing state lines from Arizona to New Mexico. He is known to check-in every night using his cell phone when at a high point.
Horton did not check in on the first night of his trip and did not show up to be picked up Wednesday, authorities say.
He did not have a set plan for where he was going but he did mention that he would travel between a mountain ridge immediately north of the drop-off point.
MCSO says Horton packed enough food for a week along with four bottles of water.
