SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ — The son of Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb was the driver involved in a serious crash with a bicyclist Wednesday night.
The cyclist was hospitalized with severe injuries after being hit by Cooper Lamb's car.
The 20-year-old had his blood drawn by detectives due to "potential impairment."
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating the crash after Sheriff Lamb asked the investigation to be transferred out of his agency to avoid a conflict of interest.
The crash happened in the San Tan Valley area, on Gary Road just south of Judd Road, at around 6:45 pm on July 8.
MCSO said in a statement:
"The cyclist sustained severe injuries and is currently hospitalized. The driver of the vehicle was processed for potential impairment, a warrant to draw blood was authorized and blood evidence acquired. The vehicle was also impounded as evidence."
Sheriff Lamb has preached the dangers of driving under the influence for many years. Now he is hoping his son listened.
"Don't drink and drive, it's that simple. It's very irresponsible and puts other people at risk, yourself, and it can be a very heavy burden on your family as well," said Sheriff Lamb in a Facebook video from December 2019.
Right now, Cooper Lamb has not been detained. It is unclear how long the toxicology results could take to be processed.
