A suspect has surrendered and been taken into custody following an hours-long barricade on US 60 in Wittmann.

According to a Surprise police spokesperson, officers responded to the area of Grand Avenue and Center Street  around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday after 65-year-old Gregory Rodvelt of Sun City West barricaded himself inside a vehicle with a weapon.

Air15 video showed multiple law enforcement units staged on the roadway as officials worked to clear the situation.

The incident started after a person called Surprise police to report Rodvelt who was seen brandishing a firearm.

Officers performed a traffic stop on the Rodvelt who then refused to be cooperative and wouldn't get out of the SUV, police said.

"He continued to yell that he was not going to comply with officers commands and that he was not going to exit the vehicle," Surprise Sgt. Tom Klarkowski said.

Footage showed the man coming out of his vehicle and being taken into custody at 6:15 p.m. No injuries were reported during the incident.

"Our first priority was to make sure this individual was detained safely and that his life – as well as the officers – was preserved," Klarkowski said.

US 60 was closed in both directions during the incident but it has since reopened.

The incident prevented the Maricopa County Sheriff's office from holding its scheduled community meeting.

Rodvelt was booked into the Maricopa 4th Avenue Jail and is facing several felony offenses.
