CHINO VALLEY, AZ — The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office says a 16-year-old girl was found shot to death near Chino Valley Sunday afternoon.

Spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn says the girl was found by officers with a gunshot wound to her head about 3:15 p.m. around mile marker 12 on Perkinsville Road.

D'Evelyn says the victim, Aneesa Williams, died at the scene.

According to D'Evelyn, 19-year-old Johnathan Rice was randomly firing a gun from a vehicle while a group of people were having drinks and partying.

While the group was in the back of a truck, one of the random shots then struck the 16-year-old female in the head.

An off-duty police officer happened upon the scene, according to YCSO, but had to drive an unknown distance to call 911 because there was no cell service in the area.

YCSO says it's unclear why Rice was firing his weapon. No other details about a motive in the shooting have been released.
