CHANDLER, AZ — We all know it: summertime in Arizona means hot temperatures.
To stay cool, some people gravitate towards the air conditioning, indoor activities, the pool, water park, or a sweet treat, such as ice cream. Just in time for summer, there is a new dessert spot for people to try in the Valley.
Jeremiah's Italian Ice, a Florida-based dessert concept, opened June 1 near Alma School and Ocotillo roads in Chandler. It is the company's first franchise location outside of Florida, said Abbie Mirata, one of the franchise owners.
"Our signature item here is the "Jeremiah's Gelati" and that is the layering of our Italian ice with soft ice cream," she said.
They have approximately 40 flavors of Italian ice that they rotate through, but typically have about 20 flavors available each day, she said. Flavors include strawberry-lemon, sour green apple, mango, blueberry, pina colada, banana, chocolate, Scoop Froggy Frog (mint chocolate chip), cake batter and cookie batter.
"Here in Phoenix we have a lot of really fun shaved ice places, that we love to go too. [Jeremiah's is] not quite shaved ice. It’s definitely thicker and creamier than shaved ice, but lighter and a lot more refreshing than ice cream. It falls in between," she said.
To maintain social distancing, she said they have reduced the number of people allowed inside, have their employees wearing masks and gloves, and are wiping down tables after people leave.
"We are making sure 100 percent that anyone and everyone feels comfortable and safe," she said.
