MESA, AZ — Do you want a Knuckle sandwich? It may be the one time you actually want to answer "yes."
In our latest "We're Open Arizona" story, we're highlighting Knuckle Sandwiches, a sandwich shop near Higley and Brown roads in Mesa, Arizona.
Owner Roscoe Smith opened his restaurant in 2019. His goal: to make a better sandwich.
"We roast our own roast beef. We make our own corned beef. We make our own pastrami, turkey; it's made from real turkey so none of it is processed deli meats," he said.
Originally from Chicago, he said he orders his bread from Chicago. The meatballs and marinara are made in-house using his own recipe.
You come in here hungry, you're not gonna leave hungry," he said.
His sandwiches come in three sizes: The Jab (small), The Hook (medium), and The Knockout (large). The menu also features a number of signature subs, including the meatball sandwich, steak, "Hero", and the "Knuckle Sandwich," which is braised pot roast, Swiss cheese, grilled onions, and horseradish.
Like so many restaurants, business stalled during the coronavirus pandemic. But, it was during that time that the community stepped up and showed their support.
"You know, we had a few down weeks, but people really came around and came down and supported us," he said.
The dining room has since reopened with some COVID-19-related changes: employees under temperature checks, sanitation is ramped up, and tables have been spaced further apart. Still, the feeling of togetherness isn't gone.
"You want a good sandwich and good food and good company and friendly people in a safe environment, come on out and give us a try."
