Grand Canyon's men's basketball team gets the most attention, but it was another Lopes program that earned the first-ever win over a top-ranked team.
GCU's softball team upset No. 1 Florida State 5-3 in Phoenix on Wednesday night. It was the Lopes' first win over a No. 1 team at the Division I level.
The Lopes trailed the Seminoles 3-0 early but got on the board thanks to a third-inning home run from sophomore Kaileigh Holland. Junior Jordon Keeton singled in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3 -- and in the bottom of the sixth, freshman Savannah Tourville hit a two-run double to give GCU a lead it would not give up. Sophomore Yessie Morrison pitched a full seven innings in the Lopes' win.
Florida State was a perfect 22-0 this season entering Wednesday's game.
The win gave the Lopes their third straight victory. It's part of a two-game series vs. Florida State, with the second and final game taking place immediately after the conclusion of Game 1.
