The Arizona Diamondbacks selected first baseman Pavin Smith with the seventh overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft on Monday afternoon.
The 21-year-old left-hander from Jupiter, Florida hit .342 with 13 home runs and 77 RBIs for the Virginia Cavaliers during the 2017 college baseball season.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Smith was originally selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 32nd round of the 2014 draft, but he decided to play college baseball instead. He was the third-highest rated first baseman in this year's draft by Baseball America.
According to Baseball America's scouting report, "Smith moves well for his size and is a solid athlete, and most scouts consider him an above-average defender. The track record for college first basemen high in the draft is fairly mixed, but Smith has hit his way into contention."
