Former Phoenix Suns forward Alton Ford dies at age 36

Former Phoenix Suns forward Alton Ford passed away Monday following "a lengthy battle with cancer," the Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday.

A Houston native, Ford attended Milby High School in Houston and played college basketball for the University of Houston before being selected by the Suns with the 50th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft.

Ford averaged 2.5 points and 1.7 rebounds in two seasons (64 games) with the Suns. He finished his NBA career with the Houston Rockets in the 2003-04 season.

"The Suns organization is saddened this morning by the passing of former Suns forward, Alton Ford, who was a beloved teammate and friend to many during his two seasons in Phoenix. We share our deepest condolences with Alton's friends & family during this difficult time," the Suns said in a statement Tuesday.

Ford was 36 years old.
